19:00–22:00 Typofix Manual book launch + project afterparty (café, ground floor)

What happens when typography crosses languages and cultures? This international conference for students and professionals in graphic design, typography and linguistics explores the subject from a range of perspectives.

Ben Wittner will present Multi-Scriptual, a project exploring intercultural graphic design and typography across different languages and writing systems. Henrik Birkvig will examine the origin, evolution and design of Ø/ø and Å/å as distinctive elements of Danish linguistic and cultural identity. Fraser Muggeridge will explore experimental approaches to dynamic typography and challenge conventional typesetting practices. The programme will conclude with Filip Blažek and Radek Sidun, who will introduce Typofix, a new open-access database of typographic rules and a web application for automated typographic proofreading in all 24 official EU languages.

The conference will be followed by the launch of the printed publication Typofix Manual and a project afterparty.

Programme:

  • Ben Wittner: Multi-Scriptual
Intercultural Typography and Graphic Design with Multiple Script Systems
The project «Multi–Scriptual» provides graphic designers with access to references, typefaces, foundries and practical knowledge for projects involving more than one language or writing system. Through documented projects, essays and conversations, the platform showcases design practices within the context of the languages, readers and the conditions that shape them.

  • Henrik Birkvig: After Z: A Look at some Danish ‘National Characters’
About the sound, origin, development, and design of Ø/ø and Å/å
The lecture will focus on two distinctive characters of the Danish alphabet, Ø/ø and Å/å. Exploring their pronunciation, origins and historical development, it will trace the evolution of their visual forms and the specifics of their design, showing how these so-called national characters become part of cultural identity.

  • Fraser Muggeridge: Dynamic Typographic
The talk will present examples of typesetting that go beyond what is generally considered standard practice, from individual letters and paragraphs to larger compositional structures. By combining innovative approaches to typesetting on a page or screen, it is possible to create Dynamic Typography.

  • Filip Blažek + Radek Sidun: 3, 2, 1… Typofix 1.0 🚀
The Typofix project, led by Filip Blažek and Radek Sidun in collaboration with an international team of experts, is launching an open-access database of typographic rules and a web application that automatically corrects typographic errors in all 24 official EU languages, making text editing easier and more efficient.

This event will take place within the European Typographic Proofreader project. This project is co-financed with the state support of the Czech Technology Agency within the SIGMA Programme.
